My life in Congo was good. But one day, I heard a sound in the garden and I found soldiers there.
They attacked me and I was tortured.
They tied me down, they spoiled me and left me when I was nearly paralyzed. After I came here, they operated on me, and I became somewhat better but my husband left me and the children because I was weak and not useful to him.
After some time he began to come back to the house. If I refused to sleep with him, he would beat me, or whip me with a panga (machete). I was afraid he would kill me, and I was feeling like I should kill myself by taking poison.
Sometimes when I was out, my mind would tell me, “You are in too many bad situations. Why don’t you stand in the road and let your life finish?” But then the heart would say, “You have kids.”
I was so scared all of the time, and the stress was too much. That’s why I started coming to Tutapona.
Tutapona helped me, I went to their program and learned about my trauma. They showed me that I still have my life, and therefore I have hope. They taught me to forgive.
They showed me that I still have my life.
I can be calm, and when I am so sad, I can sit down and they will listen to me.
My heart is released, I know I can do this. My kids need me to stay well. Because of Tutapona, I feel my future is going to be okay.
